Azerbaijan April 2026
I’m thrilled to announce that Azerbaijan has become my very special country number 125.
This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without first connecting with Fuad Hasanzade, who had already purchased a balloon with the dream of starting a business in his home country. However, the novelty of ballooning, restricted airspace, and the absence of regulations made progress difficult.
Through a joint effort—and with invaluable support from Barry J. Cleaver and Elshan N. Amikishiyev of the State Civil Aviation Authority in Baku—we were able to secure special permission to fly Fuad’s balloon as part of my world record attempt.
It wasn’t an easy journey. Time was running tight, and even after booking my flights, another hurdle appeared: military clearance. But in the end, everything came together, and the stars aligned for two unforgettable flights in the lee of the high Caucasus Mountains. We were even joined by the outgoing British Ambassador, His Excellency Fergus Auld, along with Elshan and the team.
The week continued with interviews at the State News Agency AZERTAC, meetings with the Ministry of Tourism, and inspiring talks at the World School and the Azercosmos Space Academy in Baku, where I met many enthusiastic students.
What an incredible experience. I can honestly say I’ve fallen in love with the country and its wonderfully welcoming people—and I hope to return soon.
